economic crisisStrategies for survival in a tough economy. Although the economy is slow, there are many things you as an entrepreneur can do to survive and even thrive.

* Know your market: If you have not researched their suppliers and competitors, this is the time. Talk to your customers about the needs they have in this economic environment, learn about the financial stability of their suppliers and talk to neighborhood business on the market share in these difficult times.

* Keep a low inventory: Most consumers are buying and spending less. Keep your supplies and inventory at a low level so as not to stick with products they can not sell. Try to buy only what you need when you can.

* Maximize your marketing strategy: Instead of stopping their marketing efforts, think of strategies to help you get more out of these efforts. Special promotions are particularly useful during difficult financial times, and offer customers an incentive to buy. The familiar “two for one” for a limited time is an easy and inexpensive to promote their products and services.

* Reduce your dependence on credit cards: Business owners who take this financial crisis as a short-term situation may end in a dependent relationship with credit cards. If you are using credit cards to make payments during the time of crisis, it is best to change their approach to cost reduction. The use your cards to the limit (or close to the limit) can have a negative impact on your credit score and take you to pay higher interest rates.

* Explore alternatives for funding: The lack of access to credit makes it harder for small business growth. But even when banks are less willing to lend, there are other organizations such as nonprofit agencies or state-sponsored programs that can provide the capital they need.
